Important Safety Notice: Shimano 11‑Speed Bonded HOLLOWTECH II Road Cranksets

Alchemy Cycle Trader, in collaboration with Shimano Australia Cycling, wishes to inform our customers of an inspection and replacement program affecting select 11‑speed HOLLOWTECH II road cranksets produced between 1 June 2012 and 30 June 2019.

This program specifically concerns the following Shimano cranksets in Australia: ULTEGRA FC‑6800, DURA‑ACE FC‑9000, ULTEGRA FC‑R8000, DURA‑ACE FC‑R9100, and FC‑R9100‑P. Reports received by Shimano indicate that, in rare cases, the bonded parts of the crank arm could separate, creating a risk of falls or crashes.

To ensure rider safety, Shimano will inspect any affected crankset. Any crank arm that fails the inspection will be replaced free of charge.

Not all ULTEGRA and DURA‑ACE cranksets require inspection—only those manufactured within the specified date range. This inspection aims to quickly identify any possible bonding separation issues and remove any potential safety risk.

If you have one of the affected cranksets, we strongly encourage you to bring it into Alchemy Cycle Trader for inspection. Our team will ensure it is checked and replaced promptly if necessary.

At Alchemy Cycle Trader, your safety is our top priority. Shimano has identified a potential issue with select 11‑speed HOLLOWTECH II road cranksets produced between 1 June 2012 and 30 June 2019. Certain ULTEGRA and DURA‑ACE cranksets may experience bonding separation, which could pose a fall or crash hazard.

We are working closely with Shimano Australia to offer inspections and replacements for affected cranksets. This applies to the following models: ULTEGRA FC‑6800, DURA‑ACE FC‑9000, ULTEGRA FC‑R8000, DURA‑ACE FC‑R9100, and FC‑R9100‑P.

Inspection Process

Starting 16 October 2023, our workshop will inspect affected cranksets for signs of bonding separation or delamination. If a crankset fails inspection, Shimano will provide a free replacement crankset, which our team will professionally install. Please do not ride your bike if your crankset requires replacement. If a replacement is temporarily unavailable, we will notify you as soon as it becomes ready.

If your crankset passes inspection, there is no further action required, and you can continue to ride with confidence.

Please note that replacement cranksets may have minor cosmetic differences from your original crankset.
